Frank Gruber

Indie folk singer-songwriter blending Midwest roots with Maine coastal storytelling

Frank Gruber is a Maine-based indie folk singer-songwriter blending Midwest roots with coastal storytelling. His music lives somewhere between front-porch reflection and open-road freedom, grounded in acoustic guitar, honest lyrics, and a voice that carries both grit and warmth.

His musical journey began early, gathered around family with his stepdad playing an old Gibson guitar while everyone sang along. That spark stayed with him. Years later, while attending Purdue University (Boiler Up!), Frank saved up to buy his first guitar, drawn in by artists like Dave Matthews Band and their guitar-forward sound. Determined to learn, he dove into those songs, laying the foundation for his own style.

After college, he began writing original music and playing around the Midwest, but life and college debt pulled him in other directions. For years, music was something he picked up and put down. It wasn’t until he moved to Maine full-time and the world slowed during the global pandemic shutdown that everything shifted. Spending more time at home, he returned to the guitar with intention, writing more consistently and rediscovering the role music could play in his life.

Growing up in the Midwest and now rooted in Maine, that sense of movement and perspective quietly carries into his songwriting, with stories shaped by change, memory, and the moments in between.

His sound draws from Dave Matthews, Bob Dylan, Eddie Vedder, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Noah Kahan, Mt. Joy, Paul Simon, Jesse Welles, and Taylor Swift, blending classic songwriting with a modern indie folk edge.

His sound has drawn comparisons to David Gray, Paul Simon, and Bob Dylan, compliments he doesn’t take lightly.

Recent releases, including “Welcome to Maine,” “Mushrooms,” and “Sunshine Ride,” highlight different sides of that journey. From seasonal New England anthems to introspective tracks about growth and connection, each song is rooted in real experiences and a strong sense of place. His upcoming single “Dopamine” leans further into an alternative edge, exploring the tension between connection and distraction in a screen-driven world.

Whether performing live at venues like One Longfellow Square, taking the stage during SXSW, or playing impromptu acoustic sessions by the water, Frank brings a raw, unfiltered energy to every performance, building momentum toward bigger stages ahead. It is less about perfection and more about presence, creating a moment people can feel.

Outside of music, Frank is an entrepreneur, investor, author, podcaster, and community builder, but songwriting is where he channels his creative energy. Inspired by artists like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, he hopes to still be playing his songs well into his 80s and 90s. Now that is something to chase.

At its core, Frank Gruber’s music is about real life, real places, and the moments that shape who we become.
